Doing the right thing for your feathered friend
At Barkers Feathered Friends Sanctuary, we understand that making the decision to rehome your bird is an incredibly difficult one. We want you to feel reassured that surrendering your bird to us is an act of love and responsibility, not a failure. This decision prioritizes your bird's well-being above all else, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
You’re entrusting your beloved companion to a team that genuinely cares. We approach every situation with compassion, patience, and understanding, because we know this is hard, and we're here to help. Your bird will be safe, valued, and receive the proper care and enrichment they deserve, with respect for their unique personality and history.
Consider this a fresh start—for both of you. We help you see surrender as a new, hopeful chapter, not an ending. You are not alone in this; we support you through difficult life situations, whether it's housing changes, health issues, financial constraints, or behavioral challenges. When you leave this page, our hope is that you feel this sanctuary is a kind, trustworthy place, and that your bird will be loved here.
Owner surrender process
To begin the owner surrender process, please complete our Owner Surrender Form. This form initiates a private, judgment-free conversation, allowing us to ensure the best outcome for your feathered friend. If you're not ready to surrender but need to talk first, you can reach us at [[email]] or [[phonenumber]]. We can also offer guidance or resources if you're looking for temporary help.
How do I start the surrender process?
Step 1: Fill Out Our Owner Surrender Form
This is the primary action to begin. The form collects your contact information, your bird’s species, age, and name, the reason for surrender (all reasons are valid), and details on health, behavior, diet, and your preferred timeline. Submitting the form starts a conversation, it does not mean immediate surrender.
What kinds of birds do you accept?
We typically take in companion birds and small feathered animals in need of a new home. This includes parrots (budgies, cockatiels, conures, amazons, macaws, African greys), small birds (finches, canaries, doves), and other companion feathered friends, depending on space and needs. If you’re unsure, please reach out and ask!
What should I prepare before contacting you?
To ensure a smooth transition, consider gathering:
Health & Medical Information: Any known illnesses, medications, vet visits, or recent changes.
Bird’s Personality & Behavior: Is your bird social, shy, hand-tame? Any biting or screaming behaviors?
Supplies & Belongings: Cage, toys, perches, food, treats (if possible).
Timeline & Availability: Your ideal surrender time and flexibility.
Honest Motivation: Understanding why helps us plan the best care. The more information you provide, the smoother the process will be for everyone.
What happens after I submit the form?
Step 2: Sanctuary Review & Compassionate Follow-Up
Our team will review your form. We will then contact you to discuss your bird’s specific needs and collaboratively plan the safest transition for them. This step is crucial for building trust and reducing any fear you might have.
What care will my bird receive?
From the moment your bird arrives, their comfort and well-being are our top priority. Every bird receives a calm intake process, health assessments, veterinary care as needed, species-appropriate nutrition, and clean, safe housing. We provide daily enrichment, social interaction, and mental stimulation, observing each bird to understand their personality, preferences, and needs. We honor each bird as an individual.
What is my bird's future at the sanctuary?
Once settled, birds are given time to decompress and heal. They are placed into thoughtful foster or sanctuary housing and are only matched with adopters when they are truly ready (if adoption is appropriate for them). Some birds remain permanent sanctuary residents, receiving lifelong care and love. Our promise to you: your bird will be treated with patience, dignity, and compassion—always. You’re giving them a future.
